Hello,
is it really a 1.6l-engine ? The "FY" is the 1.3l - 55 PS.
Bye, Klaus

I don't think that Golf Mk1 instruments will fit into a Passat Mk2. The whole cockpit is smaller and differently fixed (2 screws on the left and right side instead of 1 screw above in the middle). As you can see on the picture below, both the GTI tachometer and speedometer are rectangular - not round like they are in the Passat:

If you want to use a Golf tachometer, you better take one from the Golf Mk2. It's very similar to the Passat and should fit into the original instrument unit.

Your link links to a non displayable page.
If you want a rpm meter, i am sure you will find an original Passat 32b instrument cluster here in this forum

This is an insert from a Golf MK II, not MK I. And although it fits mechanically, the connectors are most probably different. I tried that myself. There are several versions of that instrument, one with only one plug (earlier Golfs, I think), one with two plugs of about the same width (as in your picture, later Golfs) and one with a wider and a smaller plug (Passat, at least mine).

Yes, the one on your picture is indeed a late Golf Mk2 unit. As Johannes already wrote, it won't work "plug & play" in your Passat, because the Golf's electrical system was notably changed in 1989. From then, the instruments had those two plugs.

Additionally, I don't think that the "Multifunktionsanzeige" of this tacho unit would work in a Passat. You better look for an early Golf Mk2 tachometer or take one from a Passat Mk2 - that seems by far to be the easiest solution.

Hallo Jungs,

ihr habt da glaub ich etwas durcheinander gebracht.
Der Tacho mit zwei Steckern ist beim Golf die ältere Version, sprich alte ZE. Die neue ZE besitzt dann nur noch einen Stecker.

Viele Grüße, Alex

hello VOLKS ! it's been awhile since i posted something. I found out that engine in my passat is not a FY as it was from a factory, previous owner had it swapped to DT 1.6 Petrol. I was wondering if there are some similiar engines to DT from V.A.G. which have inlet and exhaust manifolds on different sides, since i have ideas of making motorcyle carburettor setup on the engine, thank you for your answers. I hope you understood what i wrote

shoo shoo! you know, it's quite illegal to ask for things like that!

My suggestion: look up at amazon or other sources in the web for the "bentley repair manual for Volkswagen Quantum". Unfortunatetly there are no manuals from Haynes, whether from Haynes UK nor Haynes USA. Also unfortunately, this manual is written for the Quantum, the north american Version of our beloved B2. Your 1300 engine won't be in the bentley manual, this engine was never sold in a Volkswagen Quantum to North America.

Otherwise, get a good dictionary for german and buy at amazon or similar sites the famous german repair manuals:"Jetzt helfe ich mir selbst" from Dieter Korp or "So wirds gemacht" from Hans-Rüdiger Etzold.
...feinste Grüße aus dem Tiroler Unterland!

you can legally download VW manuals here : www.erwin.volkswagen.com it is not for free, but you can book a daily ticket, which seems to be reasonable priced ....
